  • CEO, Karen Langley, reaches long-service milestone

Business owner and CEO of Premier Communication Electronics, Karen Langley, celebrated 25 years with the company on the 11th June. Karen joined PCE in 1995 to run the administrative, commercial and legislative aspects of the business and in 2008 she become the majority shareholder and CEO. The business had humble beginnings, and under her leadership has grown from dealing in mobile phones and pagers, to a niche technology company that provides a wealth of wireless communication solutions to businesses throughout the UK. From providing bespoke two-way radio solutions, to installing and maintaining the blue lights and sirens to emergency service vehicles, and fitting CCTV and asset tracking to fleets, the work PCE does is unique, purposeful and has public and staff safety at its heart. In the last 10 years, Karen has led the organisation to win a number of awards including the coveted nationwide industry FCS (Federation of Communication Services – the industry governing body for UK voice and data communications) Installer of the Year award on four separate occasions, and the Express and Echo Small Business of the Year award in 2012. In 2019 PCE was a finalist in the Business Services category at the Exeter Living Awards. Karen sits on the national Business Radio Council and the Vehicle Installer Committee at the FCS. PCE was one of the first businesses in Exeter to achieve the information security ISO:27001 accreditation. PCE’s 15 strong engineering team are constantly training and developing their skills to keep up with the latest technologies, newest products and industry standards. Karen invests heavily in staff development and that’s why over 65% of her employees have been with the company for over five years. As testament to her commitment to career development, in early 2018 PCE became the first approved FCS training academy for engineers specialising in installing communication and warning equipment into vehicles. Being recognised as a nationally approved training academy means PCE can aid the professional development of installation engineers. Karen is committed to investing in local young people to provide career opportunities. PCE provide training and support for engineering apprentices, and partners with local education institutions. In 2018, it was the first time a female applied and succeeded in securing the position of installation engineering apprentice. With only 12% of the nationwide engineering workforce being female, and understanding what it’s like to forge her way in a male dominated industry, Karen was excited to welcome 17-year-old Libby Daymond, and do her bit to address the gender imbalance in the engineering and technology industries. #Industrynews

  • National Marine Aquarium to benefit from new digital radio solution from PCE

Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) is on the brink of installing a new two-way digital radio solution for the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. The Exeter-based radio experts has designed a radio communications solution that will enable all of the Aquarium’s staff to stay in touch at all times despite the challenging space they work in. The award-winning aquarium has a complex internal structure to accommodate its 55 tanks with much of it underground in damp conditions. The staff had previously used an analogue radio system consisting of a Tait repeater and Rexon and Entel handsets, but the sound quality was poor and the coverage was incomplete with a number of black spots where communication was impossible. PCE’s sales executive Natalia Ferrazzano said: “The Aquarium was keen to upgrade their radio system to a digital version and we set about designing a solution that would meet their needs for complete coverage and better sound quality. Our bespoke antenna system has solved the problem of the black spots and the waterproof 40 digital handsets and ear-pieces eliminate the noise interference from the tanks.” The National Marine Aquarium – which welcomes over 280,000 visitors a year – has invested in a Hytera solution that also gives staff members texting capabilities and the ability to make private calls between users or groups of users. Miss Ferrazzano added: “Every handset is also equipped with an emergency button too so help can be immediately called for should an incident occur involving a member of staff and or one of the thousands of visitors who flock to this attraction every year. “This solution perfectly illustrates how efficient a two-way radio system can be for businesses that want to communicate to multiple members of staff but operate in large, noisy and challenging premises where mobile phones are simply not suitable.” Dr David Gibson, managing director at the National Marine Aquarium, commented: “As a busy leisure attraction, it’s important that our staff at the Aquarium have access to communication systems that help them keep in touch with each other, wherever they are in the building. “We know that the Aquarium is a challenge, given the number of tanks which can cause interference for radios, but we are confident that PCE’s new solution will be a welcome addition for our teams on the ground – we are looking forward to getting the new system up and running.” The new radio system is due to be pre-programmed and installed by PCE’s engineers this month. • Resilience levels in Business Radio Systems

PCE commits to new code of practice which enables the purchase of resilient radio communication equipment making it more accessible for the end user. Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) has worked with the Federation of Communication Services (FCS), the industry association for communication services sector, on producing a set of guidelines to support those wishing to purchase a “resilient” radio communication system. A resilient system is one that works so reliably that we rarely have to think about it. Resilient systems are part of our daily existence and we only begin to think (and complain) about these when system failures happen. A resilient radio communication system is one that meets an organisations appropriate level of need for their operational requirements. The FCS 5-Level Resilience Assessment Scheme provides a working solution to those needing to purchase radio communications equipment and offers criteria to help them decide which level of resilience is required. The guidelines help the purchasing professional to ask the right questions prior and during the purchasing process to make sure they fully support their organisations’ operational requirements at the most economical cost. Meeting the appropriate level of resilience proves mutually beneficial for both parties; it allows the purchaser to provide a clear and correct brief and avoid unnecessary costs and allows the radio reseller to provide an efficient service that meets the end users’ values and requirements. As well as a solid set of criteria, the Resilience Assessment Scheme sets apart the reputable radio resellers, like PCE, who work with these guidelines on a daily basis and are happy to share this information with the end user. Karen Langley, PCE’s Chief Executive Officer, and Business Radio Council representative at the FCS said: “We’re so pleased these important guidelines are now in public domain. Having contributed to them with my colleagues on the Business Radio Council I know they’ll make a big difference to those purchasing radio equipment and resellers like PCE. We’re keen to make the purchasing process as transparent as possible and following these guidelines will offer our customers the confidence we have met their expectations”. #twowayradio

  • Spring clean your business radio communications

Having a good sort out and turning out items you no longer use or are no longer fit for purpose should not be a domestic annual ritual. It is healthy to apply the same sentiment to your business communications equipment. Consider your estate of two-way radio equipment: Do all the handsets still work? Are you getting the coverage your site needs? Is the voice clarity clear enough? Are your conversations being overheard? Are their features you wish you could use? i.e. man-down, text messaging There is no point hanging onto two-way radio equipment that does not work anymore. Either get it fixed or replace it. We can advise you on whether your equipment is worth fixing but are willing also to advise you – for free – on alternatives that may better suit your business needs…which may have changed since you bought your original two-way radio estate. Now consider your business: Has it grown – in terms of size of site and/or number of employees? Have you relocated recently? Are your employees required to spend extended time away from their desks… if indeed they have a desk at all? Do you need to meet more stringent duty of care regulations? Are you under pressure to be more efficient and productive? Do you employees come into contact with potentially hazardous substances? If your business has altered, you may need to tweak your radio solution. A carefully considered two-way radio solution is designed to help you remain in contact with your staff throughout the day, maintain their safety , and that of the general public and will ensure conversations and decisions can be swiftly and efficiently made. Hanging onto an incumbent solution that barely meets your needs does not make good business sense. And the extra functionality available on more modern solutions could thoroughly enhance your business using improved audio, longer battery life, better range, enhanced privacy, increased capacity, man-down and much-more. If your business uses two-way radio and you feel a spring clean is well overdue, please feel free to call or email me for free review.
