  • CEO, Karen Langley, reaches long-service milestone

Business owner and CEO of Premier Communication Electronics, Karen Langley, celebrated 25 years with the company on the 11th June. Karen joined PCE in 1995 to run the administrative, commercial and legislative aspects of the business and in 2008 she become the majority shareholder and CEO. The business had humble beginnings, and under her leadership has grown from dealing in mobile phones and pagers, to a niche technology company that provides a wealth of wireless communication solutions to businesses throughout the UK. From providing bespoke two-way radio solutions, to installing and maintaining the blue lights and sirens to emergency service vehicles, and fitting CCTV and asset tracking to fleets, the work PCE does is unique, purposeful and has public and staff safety at its heart. In the last 10 years, Karen has led the organisation to win a number of awards including the coveted nationwide industry FCS (Federation of Communication Services – the industry governing body for UK voice and data communications) Installer of the Year award on four separate occasions, and the Express and Echo Small Business of the Year award in 2012. In 2019 PCE was a finalist in the Business Services category at the Exeter Living Awards. Karen sits on the national Business Radio Council and the Vehicle Installer Committee at the FCS. PCE was one of the first businesses in Exeter to achieve the information security ISO:27001 accreditation. PCE’s 15 strong engineering team are constantly training and developing their skills to keep up with the latest technologies, newest products and industry standards. Karen invests heavily in staff development and that’s why over 65% of her employees have been with the company for over five years. As testament to her commitment to career development, in early 2018 PCE became the first approved FCS training academy for engineers specialising in installing communication and warning equipment into vehicles. Being recognised as a nationally approved training academy means PCE can aid the professional development of installation engineers. Karen is committed to investing in local young people to provide career opportunities. PCE provide training and support for engineering apprentices, and partners with local education institutions. In 2018, it was the first time a female applied and succeeded in securing the position of installation engineering apprentice. With only 12% of the nationwide engineering workforce being female, and understanding what it’s like to forge her way in a male dominated industry, Karen was excited to welcome 17-year-old Libby Daymond, and do her bit to address the gender imbalance in the engineering and technology industries. #Industrynews

  • National Marine Aquarium to benefit from new digital radio solution from PCE

Premier Communication Electronics (PCE) is on the brink of installing a new two-way digital radio solution for the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth. The Exeter-based radio experts has designed a radio communications solution that will enable all of the Aquarium’s staff to stay in touch at all times despite the challenging space they work in. The award-winning aquarium has a complex internal structure to accommodate its 55 tanks with much of it underground in damp conditions. The staff had previously used an analogue radio system consisting of a Tait repeater and Rexon and Entel handsets, but the sound quality was poor and the coverage was incomplete with a number of black spots where communication was impossible. PCE’s sales executive Natalia Ferrazzano said: “The Aquarium was keen to upgrade their radio system to a digital version and we set about designing a solution that would meet their needs for complete coverage and better sound quality. Our bespoke antenna system has solved the problem of the black spots and the waterproof 40 digital handsets and ear-pieces eliminate the noise interference from the tanks.” The National Marine Aquarium – which welcomes over 280,000 visitors a year – has invested in a Hytera solution that also gives staff members texting capabilities and the ability to make private calls between users or groups of users. Miss Ferrazzano added: “Every handset is also equipped with an emergency button too so help can be immediately called for should an incident occur involving a member of staff and or one of the thousands of visitors who flock to this attraction every year. “This solution perfectly illustrates how efficient a two-way radio system can be for businesses that want to communicate to multiple members of staff but operate in large, noisy and challenging premises where mobile phones are simply not suitable.” Dr David Gibson, managing director at the National Marine Aquarium, commented: “As a busy leisure attraction, it’s important that our staff at the Aquarium have access to communication systems that help them keep in touch with each other, wherever they are in the building. “We know that the Aquarium is a challenge, given the number of tanks which can cause interference for radios, but we are confident that PCE’s new solution will be a welcome addition for our teams on the ground – we are looking forward to getting the new system up and running.” The new radio system is due to be pre-programmed and installed by PCE’s engineers this month. • PCE welcomes first female engineering apprentice

Premier Communications Electronics (PCE) has welcomed their first female installation engineer apprentice in the company’s 42-year history. Libby Daymond, age 17, is currently studying a NVQ Level 2-3 Electrical Engineering and Maintenance course at South Devon College. Libby spends one day at week at college and the rest of her working week getting hands-on experience at PCE, supporting the team of engineers with installation projects for the blue and amber light sectors. “My favourite subjects at school were maths and physics so when I saw the role at PCE advertised I thought it was too good to be true. I love how broad the role is; one minute I’m learning how to destall a tracking device and the next heading out to a fault call for the emergency services. I never wanted to work behind a desk, so this is perfect for me”. PCE is committed to investing in local young people and provide career opportunities in engineering. PCE started providing training and support for apprentices 15 years ago but this is the first time a female has applied for the position. Karen Langley, PCEs Chief Executive is thrilled to have a female apprentice on the team. She hopes to encourage more female engineers to apply in the future and is keen to address the gender imbalance in the industry: “I completely understand the pressures and concerns of females entering this industry and I really want to break the stereotypes. With just 11%* of the engineering workforce being female, I want to show Libby and other budding female engineers that tech can be an exciting, purposeful and even welcoming industry for women”. Since starting at PCE, Libby wants to learn as much as possible and has high aspirations for her career: “I’ve been welcomed into the team and have had nothing but encouragement from my colleagues. I’m excited to stay with PCE to gain knowledge and experience in different job roles. In the long-term, I’d like to travel with my job, and possibly work for Formula One. My role model is Sunita Williams, a flight engineer. She is an inspiration; fearless, determined and shows the sky’s the limit!” #Apprenticeships

  • Want to improve productivity in 2015?

For most business owners this would a daft question. I mean, who wouldn’t? The trick is working out how to achieve that goal and we believe two-way radio would be an excellent starting point. Portable two-way radio, be it digital or analogue, UHF or VHF, will help you and your colleagues stay in touch with other members of staff. If you want to ask a colleague a question and they are out on site, on the other side of the warehouse, in another area of the campus or hotel, etc, you can immediately get hold of them. You do not have to worry about whether they have a mobile signal or if their phone is switched to silent mode. Two-way radio is a robust and reliable form of business communication designed specifically for mobile employees. It is also an excellent way of ensuring supporting your duty of care to lone working staff with an inbuilt alarm or man down feature. This form of communication will speed up your business processes and will ensure decisions are made more swiftly. Better still, two-way radios allow your staff to contribute to conversations while carrying on with their work negating the need for them to return to their desks. Productivity is therefore improved and, hopefully, you will see an increase in your turnover too. Two-way radio solutions are ideal for property and facilities management staff, the service industry and people working in rough terrain environments where their time at a desk, if indeed they have one, is very limited.
