Bicton College

Bicton College is set within an area of outstanding natural beauty in the heart of Devon. The College offers a range of land-based courses including agriculture, animal husbandry and countryside management. We have supplied radios to Bicton College for over several years, and helped them make the switch from analogue to digital.

The Challenge

With over 5,000 students and staff, and set in 200 hectares of land, radio communication is crucial to Bicton College. After struggling to get complete coverage across its huge site, the College decided to upgrade to a more comprehensive and secure system that allowed for a better range, clearer voice clarity and privacy for emergency situations.

The Solution

A mix of digital radios including a number of models particularly suited to open spaces. We supply:

  • Motorola Solutions MOTOTRBO digital repeater system allowing long-range coverage between maintenance and ground staff across their extensive site.

  • DMR radio system to ensure the group communications are private and are not broadcast across the entire frequency.

  • Integration with fire alarm system with text message alerts in case of emergency.

  • Two channels, one frequency using TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) for greater spectrum efficiency and reducing licensing costs.

The Result

An integrated and secure system. The staff now have peace of mind they can be in constant contact whether they are in the College or out in its extensive parkland.

Ross Cooper, Campus Manager of Bicton College, said:

“Our radios are critical in ensuring student and staff safety, and effective communication throughout the College. We are delighted with the enhanced quality, features and coverage of the new radios and have been really pleased with the service and continued support provided by PCE.”
