Petroc College

Petroc College offers a range of study programmes, courses and qualifications, and serves up to 20,000 students each year, including distance and work-based learners. The college employs more than 1,000 staff over two main campuses in Barnstaple and Tiverton.

The Challenge

Both college sites were struggling with their radio solutions. Problems consisted of poor coverage, short battery life and communication interference making contact between the sites caretakers and estate staff inconsistent and frustrating. Neither system was efficiently meeting the colleges’ needs.

In addition, Petroc organised a motorsport event attended by 4,000 people at a nearby Royal Marines Base. This event required a radio system to assist with vital communications on the day.

The Solution

An audit and upgrade of their current radio system to keep operations running smoothly. We supply:

  • Maintenance of existing equipment at the Barnstaple site

  • Supply of repeaters for both sites.

  • New VHF system at the Tiverton site.

  • Robust hand portable radios with an 11-hour battery life.

  • Emergency alert function.

  • Re-programming of existing radios and engineer cover for the motorsport event.

The Result

A robust and reliable radio solution that meets the needs of the day-to-day operational running of the two college sites.

The system can also be re-programmed for ad hoc events meaning additional radio hire is no longer necessary.

Steve Haines, Buildings and Maintenance Manager for Petroc, said:

“PCE has always provided us with a very fast, efficient and professional service. They have always met our needs without the hard sell of unnecessary equipment.”
